Welcome to the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University!
We are a large and complex School. We have over 1,000 undergraduate
students who major in Family Life, with a declared emphasis in either
Human Development or Family Studies. Some students major in Family and
Consumer Sciences Education, which prepares graduates to teach in junior
high and high school. In addition, we offer masters and doctoral degrees
in Marriage and Family Therapy, as well as Marriage, Family, and Human
Development. We have faculty within the School who represent five different
disciplines: Family and Consumer Sciences, Family Finance, Family Studies,
Human Development, and Marriage and Family Therapy
Within all of this organizational and disciplinary complexity, the
faculty, students, and alumni of the School of Family Life share a passion
for understanding and strengthening families, as well as the children and
adults that live within families. It is this common mission that unites
us all.
As you are aware, we live in a troubled world that has dangers,
challenges, and temptations at nearly every turn. The family, which
for centuries has stood as a fortress against these threats, has weakened
significantly in recent decades. There is a clamor of voices speaking
out about the contemporary family, some applauding the decline of strong,
value-based families. Other voices are loud, yet lacking reliable and
principles-based information.
In the midst of this multitude of voices that are meant to help families,
what is needed is a strong voice, a clear voice, a respected voice that can
provide accurate information about healthy family relationships that can
shape the public dialogue about how to strengthen families. We need that
voice to influence the development of programs that are based on rock solid
research and time-honored values. We don’t need more voices that promote
different lifestyles or dilute the role of the family in our society. We
need a voice that will stand tall against the worldly winds of public opinion
and provide information about family life that will guide parents and spouses
as they strive to establish and maintain healthy, happy homes and that lead
to the development of programs that will truly strengthen families. In the
mist of the confusing array of voices speaking out about families issues,
it is timely—and vital—for the School of Family Life to rise and assume a
leadership role in strengthening families.
You are invited to participate in helping Brigham Young University’s School
of Family Life fulfill its potential as a leading institution of family
scholarship to strengthen families throughout the world. Your contribution
towards the School’s $20 million funding priority is vital to ensure that there
is a clear, strong, voice that that will strengthen families.
With your support, the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University
will become that desperately needed voice.
The School of Family life is seeking partners-those concerned enough about preserving families-who are willing to lend individual support to a worldwide effort. We invite your participation.
Warm regards,
Rick Miller
